Miss Trask’s footsteps echoed through the empty foyer of the Manor House. Dust glinted and danced in the sun rays that peeked through the draperies. The silence that surrounded her provided assurance that she was indeed alone on the big estate. She knew that Regan had gone into town for dinner and that the other staff were tucked into their quarters on the third floor, their windows closed tight against the summer heat and their air conditioners turned up. And Honey was happily ensconced at the Belden farm, enjoying a sleepover with Trixie. Miss Trask went out the front door and walked into the big garage. She looked around quickly until she spotted what she was seeking. After glancing over her shoulder, she deftly wheeled Honey’s new bicycle out of its’ parking spot and into the driveway and put the kickstand down. Miss Trask paused to examine the shiny bike, wiping a few smudges with her index finger. She hummed a lilting tune and grinned. After one more look around the area to make sure no one was watching, Miss Trask sat on the seat of the bicycle, released the kickstand and pushed forward. Immediately she began pedaling until she reached the top of the big hill. Without the slightest hesitation, Miss Trask lifted her feet off the pedals and stuck her legs straight out. The wind caused by the bike’s rapid downhill motion ruffled and fluffed her short hair. Her eyes sparkled and her smile was wide. She could barely stop herself from yelling out, “Whee!” When Miss Trask reached the bottom of the hill, she skillfully turned the bicycle around and pumped her legs, carrying herself back to the top. After a moment’s thought, she turned around and again coasted down the hill. The next time she returned to the top of the hill, she rode the bicycle back into the garage and put it in its’ proper place. She stepped back and quickly smoothed her clothes and her hair. With another quick glance around the grounds, Miss Trask strode across the wide driveway and back into the Manor House, shutting the door firmly behind her as she returned to her duties.
