Fire and Ice

Six Bobwhites gathered around the picnic table at the Wheeler Lake. Chips and munchies covered the table and loaded coolers were parked nearby. The late May sun was bright and the day was warm. A picnic and swim party, marking the end of the school year, was underway.

"Where's Trixie," asked Honey.

Mart, his mouth full of Cheetos, made air quotes with his fingers and replied, "Golf lesson with Tad."

The awkward silence that followed was broken by a shout from Trixie and she and Tad came into view.

"Sorry we're late," said Trixie breathlessly as the two joined the group. "I was having too much fun learning to drive."

"You already know how to drive, Trixie. In fact, I am fairly certain that you have a driver's license", noted Mart.

"No, Mart. I was learning to drive the golf ball," explained Trixie as she stripped off her shirt and shorts and ran to the water.

"Come on, let's have some fun," she yelled back to the group.

Tad and the rest of the Bobwhites followed suit and soon they were all splashing and playing. The warm sun beat down on the friends as the afternoon sped by.

Mart brought an end to the water games when he announced that he was famished. The group scrambled out of the water. After drying off, they set out the food and began grilling the hamburgers that they had brought.

"Oooh, Trixie," said Tad, "Look at your shoulders and back."

"Ouch," said Trixie as she tenderly touched the beginning of a nasty sunburn.

"Your back looks like it's on fire. Here, let me see if I can help," said Tad. He grabbed a handful of ice chips from the nearby cooler and gently rubbed them over Trixie's red shoulders.

"Oooohhh, Tad," moaned Trixie, "oohh, that feels soooo good."

Trixie leaned into Tad's caresses as he continued to rub ice on her back. Diana grabbed a burger, slid it into a bun, and then put it on a plate. She handed it to a stunned Mart, who was watching Tad and his sister. "Mart," she whispered, "make sure to close your mouth when you eat or your food will fall out."
