The Bobwhites sat in their usual booth at Wimpy's. They had all committed to attending the Sleepyside High School Homecoming game, parade and dance. The weekend activities gave them the chance to step away from their college lives and enjoy each other's company. Their laughter could be heard over the post football crowd that had converged on the favored diner. Mart was laughing at the antics of Dan when he looked up and saw Tad Webster approaching.
"Hey, Webster," yelled Mart.
"Hey, Belden, you old dawg," teased Tad. The two friends high fived each other. The rest of the Bobwhites greeted Tad while conversations flew around. Tad lingered at the table, enjoying the rambunctious camaraderie. Looking down, Tad noticed that Mart had the hamburger platter with the new specialty fries.
"Hey, can I have one," Tad questioned, pointing to the fries. Without waiting for an answer, he helped himself to a few.
Mart hesitated, then shrugged, "What's a few fries between old friends?"
Tad and Mart moved their conversation from the high school football field to the professional football field. Tad was an ardent Pittsburgh fan while Mart favored the Patriots. Their exchange heated up, with the statistics and records of each team being thrown about. Each time Tad wanted to make a point, he would grab a French fry to use for emphasis, shaking it in Mart's face.
Trixie finally had had enough of the sports bickering and spoke up, "Mart. Tab. You both just zip it!"
Mart and Tad looked at Trixie in surprise. Tad smiled, winked at Trixie, then waved to the group and headed to another table of old friends. Mart made crossed eyes at Trixie and then settled back into the booth to enjoy his dinner and friends. Mart reached out to grab a fry, only to come up empty-handed. With a shocked and anguished look on his face, Mart stared at the nearly empty plate in front of him.
"Webster, get back here. You are a dawg!" yelled Mart across the diner. The rest of the Bobwhites broke out in roaring laughter that again filled the crowded room.
