Trixie heaved the bottle of orange soda pop into the basket of her bike.
"Stupid Mart," she grumbled. "I should have known he would make me pay for forgetting to feed Reddy."
Trixie's penalty for her lapse was to ride to Lytell's Store and get Mart a bottle of orange soda.
"What kind of an idiot likes this stuff," she thought as she pedaled towards Crabapple Farm. As Trixie rode, she appreciated the beauty of the woods on either side of the lane and began to make plans for spending time in the preserve later that day. Trixie was so lost in her own thoughts that she didn't focus on the road in front of her. Suddenly, Trixie's bicycle veered sharply as she hit a large stone lying in the middle of the road. The bottle of orange soda flew through the air and landed directly in front of her. Unable to stop, Trixie ran squarely over the bottle. The orange soda bottle ruptured down the middle and spewed orange goop all over Trixie and her bicycle.
"Oooh, Mart," Trixie yelled furiously as she pedaled back to Crabapple Farm, dripping orange splotches as she went.
Mart was sitting at the kitchen table, waiting for Trixie's return. He saw her ride into the yard and smiled, pleased that he had found a way to get her to ride to Lytell's for him. He watched as Trixie parked her bike and stomped through the yard and up to the door. She slammed the kitchen door shut and positioned herself directly in front of Mart. Mart looked up at Trixie and a big grin appeared on his face. His eyes lit up at the sight of his sister standing in front of him, curls and clothes covered with orange soda.
"I hope you're happy. Look what your stupid bottle of soda did to me," Trixie yelled. Trixie, not waiting for an answer, turned and stormed out of the kitchen and up the stairs. Mart, hearing the pounding footsteps, burst out laughing.
"Seeing Trixie wearing the orange soda was better than drinking it," he laughed.
