Sorry

Trixie sat cross legged in a circle in her kindergarten class. She watched as her teacher, Miss Hackett, led them in the song "The Itsy Bitsy Spider". As Trixie made her spider crawl up the water spout, she thought about how much she loved Miss Hackett and kindergarten.

"My teacher is so beautiful," smiled Trixie.

Thinking about beauty reminded Trixie of another beautiful person, a dark haired girl named Diana..

"She is so pretty," Trixie told herself, "and I want to be her friend."

But as Trixie looked around the circle, she couldn't find Diana. Spinning around, she saw Diana sitting behind her. Diana looked up at Trixie and smiled. Trixie waved at Diana. But to Trixie's dismay, another student, Jane Morgan, saw Trixie's wave and returned it with one of her own.

"That stupid Jane Morgan," Trixie scowled. "She should know I don't like her."

Trixie wanted to show Jane how much she disliked her so she stuck her tongue out at her.

"There, that should fix her," thought Trixie with satisfaction.

As Trixie spun back around to face Miss Hackett, she saw the look of disapproval on her face. Trixie was thrown into a state of panic. Did Miss Hackett see what she had done? Did Miss Hackett hate her? Would she have to leave kindergarten? Trixie spent the rest of the class fretting and wishing that Jane Morgan had never come to school.

"This is all Jane's fault," Trixie thought as she stomped her foot.

Later, as the class lined up at the door to leave for the day, Miss Hackett called Trixie out of line. Trixie walked up and stood in front of Miss Hackett.

"Trixie," Miss Hackett said, "I don't think that was very nice behavior. I think you need to apologize to Jane. I'm sure you don't want to hurt anyone's feelings."

Trixie, her face scarlet and her eyes full of big tears, looked at the floor.

"Trixie," Miss Hackett said softly.

Trixie looked at the line of student and saw all of their eyes on her. Seeing Jane, Trixie trudged up to her and said very quietly, "I'm sorry." Then she went and stood at the end of the line, her face down and tears on her cheeks. Would her beloved kindergarten ever be the same?
