Saying the Wrong Thing

Trixie hummed to herself as she grabbed a shopping cart from the cart corral at the front of the store. She was on a shopping excursion to purchase all the necessary ingredients for her beef stroganoff, a dish she planned to make for Tad Webster that evening. Trixie happily cruised through the aisles, grabbing a can of beef broth, some noodles and other supplies. She careened around the corner and accidently ran her cart into another shopper’s cart. Trixie immediately started to apologize, but stopped when she recognized the shopper.

"Oh, excuse me. Wait, Jane Morgan," she exclaimed. "what are you doing here? I thought you moved away to be a big star."

Jane Morgan forced herself to smile at the popular blond standing in front of her.

"So, why are you shopping here?" Trixie continued. "Are you done with stardom or are you just taking a break?"

Jane tried to answer Trixie’s questions, but Trixie continued to chatter and Jane was unable to get a word in. As Jane stepped around her cart, she heard Trixie gasp.

"Jane, I had no idea you were married." she exclaimed. "But you must be because you are clearly pregnant. I had no idea you were expecting. Congratulations on your marriage and your pregnancy!"

Jane’s face froze. She suddenly stepped away from Trixie and grasped her cart, intent on wheeling away from her high school acquaintance.

Trixie’s face took on a puzzled expression.

"Did I offend you, Jane? Did I say something wrong? Is the pregnancy a secret?" she asked.

Jane pushed her cart alongside of Trixie’s and lowered her mouth to Trixie's ear.

"I am not married." she told Trixie in an icy voice.

"Oh," gulped Trixie as she felt her face redden.

"And for the record, I’m not pregnant either," Jane hissed as her narrowed eyes stared into Trixie’s shocked face.

Trixie turned and watched as Jane maneuvered her cart around Trixie’s and disappeared around the corner. "Oops," Trixie grimaced. She shook her head and then quickly zipped her cart up and down the store aisles, quickly tossing in items as she went. If her luck held, she would be able to get out of the store without another encounter with Jane.
